MS Awareness Month: Mia’s Journey & Redefining Multiple Sclerosis Rehabilitation in Chicagoland

“I was just graduating college and I would trip, and I was very clumsy. We just thought it was what I was doing, the way I walked, or wearing heels… It took a very long time for them to figure out what I had.”

These are the words of Mia Shideler, whose journey with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a powerful reminder of the strength and resilience required to navigate one of the world’s most misunderstood diseases. In honor of MS Awareness Month, we are sharing Mia’s story to raise awareness and shed light on what it truly takes to fight back. Watch her full story on our Facebook Reel.

Behind every MS diagnosis is a life full of purpose, courage, and hope. At Next Steps Chicago, we are honored to be part of that journey, providing the expert, one-on-one physical therapy that patients like Mia rely on to keep moving forward.

Understanding MS: The Invisible Illness

When Mia was first experiencing symptoms like tripping and clumsiness, it was easy to brush them off as everyday mishaps. This is incredibly common. Multiple Sclerosis is a chronic inflammatory disease of the central nervous system (CNS), which includes the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves.

In MS, the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks the myelin sheath—the protective insulation surrounding nerve fibers. When this myelin is damaged, the electrical signals traveling between the brain and the rest of the body are slowed or interrupted. This misfiring can cause a wide array of unpredictable neurological symptoms, including muscle weakness, ataxia (loss of coordination and clumsiness), severe fatigue, and decreased balance.

Because MS is as unique as a fingerprint, and its symptoms can mimic other conditions, getting a diagnosis can be a long and frustrating detour. For Mia, the diagnosis ultimately brought relief—it was the first step in understanding her body and taking proactive steps toward her health.

Proactive Recovery: The Power of Physical Therapy

As Mia emphasizes, navigating MS requires a strong support system, great doctors, and great physical therapy.

While there is currently no cure for MS, a multidisciplinary approach to management is essential for improving a patient’s quality of life. Physical therapy is a critical pillar of this management. For patients diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, targeted physical therapy can help maintain current levels of function, increase endurance, improve overall mobility, and allow patients to practice crucial balance activities.

At Next Steps Chicago, our mission is to provide the neurological community with affordable, dynamic, and progressive rehabilitation. We establish our authority in MS care through an unwavering commitment to specialized, high-quality treatment:

  • One-on-One Expert Care: Just as Mia shared, “You work one-on-one with your therapist.” At Next Steps, every physical and occupational therapy session is conducted one-on-one with a highly skilled, licensed therapist. This individualized attention is an absolute imperative for gaining strength, enhancing range of motion, and living as independently as possible.
  • Cutting-Edge Therapeutic Technology: We are the first free-standing, non-profit physical therapy facility uniquely devoted to complex neurological conditions. We utilize world-class equipment to encourage neuroplasticity and regain function, including the Ekso Indego, a robotic walking system that provides intensive, custom-tailored gait training specifically designed for patients with MS, spinal cord injuries, and stroke.
  • Advanced Balance Training: Because MS frequently impacts balance, we utilize the BITS Balance System, an integrated therapy tool used to assess and train patients with balance and coordination deficits. Next Steps is the only non-hospital-based rehabilitation center in the area with this device. We also proudly integrate STROLLL Augmented Reality Goggles to visually stimulate patients, improve walking, and reduce the risk of falls.

A Community of Strength in Struggle

Beyond the advanced technology and expert therapy, what truly sets Next Steps Chicago apart is the environment. As Mia perfectly put it: “It’s a community, and you can relate to everyone here, and you talk to other patrons who are also trying to improve.”

Our facility offers a challenging and competitive yet safe and structured environment where clients strive for achievement together. Dealing with a chronic, unpredictable illness like MS can feel incredibly isolating, but at Next Steps, no one fights alone.

This MS Awareness Month, let’s stand together. Share Mia’s story to help spread knowledge about this complex disease.
